We are all familiar with the story of the first Thanksgiving in Plymouth Colony,Massachusetts in 1621. But did you know there are at least 12 other places in 5 different states that claim to have had the first thanksgiving in America?1 Here is a list of other interesting facts about the holiday:

  • Massachusetts is one of the top cranberry growing states (Wisconsin is the only state that produces more!)
  • Turkey became part of the traditional dinner in New England in 1857
  • The first Thanksgiving was a 3 day affair that happened between September 21 and November 1 in 16211
  • Thanksgiving was considered a substitute for Christmas in New England before the Civil War2
  • Early Thanksgiving dinners most likely consisted of seafood. It is likely that mussels, lobster, bass, clams and oysters could have been served3
  • Thanksgiving was not an official national holiday until 1941 4
  • Forks were not present at the first Thanksgiving dinner. Pilgrims only used spoons, knives and their fingers5
